Visiting NYC With Your Dog

Hotel Park Ave logo.

New York is a better dog city than most people expect. Dogs ride in tote bags, sit outside cafes and have strong opinions about certain corners. Bringing yours along takes a little planning, but not much.

Here's what to know, starting with where they'll sleep.

Dogs at Hotel

Park Ave NYC

Dogs are welcome. We keep it straightforward.

  • The fee. A $150 pet fee applies per stay

  • On arrival. A bed, mat and bowl await

  • Around the hotel. Dogs are welcome in guest rooms and throughout the hotel. The exceptions are Park Rose, Seed Library and Golden Child. Service dogs with proper identification are welcome everywhere.

  • In the room. Please don't leave dogs unattended

  • Booking. Mention your dog when you book, and we'll have everything ready

Beyond that, the hotel is theirs as much as yours.

The neighborhood,

at dog level

Madison Square Park. A short walk from the hotel, the park has its own dog run. Jemmy's Dog Run sits near 24th Street, with separate areas for small and large dogs and water on hand. It's named after James Madison, whose nickname was Jemmy. The morning crowd is mostly regulars, and the dogs are usually more social than their owners.

Morning and evening walks. Park Ave So is wide and easy to walk. The side streets of Murray Hill, just east of the hotel, are quieter and lined with brownstones. Most dogs prefer those.

Central Park. Worth the trip if your dog likes space. Under NYC Parks rules, dogs can be off leash in designated areas from 6-9am and from 9pm-1am. Outside those hours, leashes are required.

Flatiron Building.

Getting around

with a dog

  • The subway. Dogs are allowed only if they fit in a bag or carrier. Larger dogs will need another plan.

  • Taxis and rideshare. Taxi drivers can decline pets, so a rideshare with a pet option is usually more reliable.

  • Walking. Often the best option anyway. Most of NoMad and Flatiron is within 15 minutes on foot.

EATING OUT

Many New York restaurants allow dogs at outdoor tables. It's at each restaurant's discretion, so ask before you sit down. Indoor dining rooms are off limits except for service animals.

A few

practical notes

  • Pack a collapsible bowl. Not every corner has a water station.

  • Mind the pavement. Sidewalks get hot in summer and salted in winter. Booties or a quick paw wipe after walks help.

  • Clean up. Every time. New Yorkers notice.

Most dogs settle into the city quickly. Some settle in faster than their owners.
